Dear colleagues, We would like to invite you all for our third lecture of the academic year 2011/12 within the framework of the Leuven Archaeological Research Seminar (LARS). Please note that this lecture starts at 17.00h (instead of our normal 16.00h). -------------------- To See or to Be Seen? Barrows and their Visual Impact on the Landscape Drs. Quentin Bourgeois Leiden University It is widely accepted within archaeology that barrows and burial mounds create evocative spaces within a landscape. Theories on the role and function of barrows in the wider landscape focus mostly on the visual effect of the burial monument. Though interpretations on how this visual effect is achieved and how it should be researched differ widely. Additionally the studies of these visual effects rarely address problems of representativity. Many of these problems can be alleviated through the critical use of GIS (Geographic Information System) with the adoption of randomization processes and the reconstruction of past vegetation. Equally the creation of cumulative viewshed and skyline maps provide a more complex insight on the visual impact of burial mounds on their surroundings. These different approaches reveal a hitherto unknown structuring and hierarchy in barrow landscapes. Thursday 10 November 2011 | 17.00 - 18.00 hours | Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Monseigneur Sencie-Institute 01.16, Erasmusplein 2, Leuven -------------------- Hope to see you all there! Best wishes, LARS (Rick Bonnie, Jonas Danckers & Rinse Willet)
