Graag zou ik u willen vragen om onderstaande vacature via uw netwerk te verspreiden. alvast hartelijk dank! vriendelijke groeten, Fleur Kemmers [JOB] PhD position in Mediterranean Archaeology/Roman Archaeology Frankfurt am Main (Germany) At the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Institute of Archaeology, Department for Archaeology of the Roman Provinces and Auxiliary sciences, the research project ´Coinage and the dynamics of power: the Western Mediterranean 500-100 BC´ offers 1 PhD-position (E13 TV-G-U, 50 %) for three years, starting date 1.09.2010. The research project is part of the Lichtenberg-chair for coins and money in the Graeco-Roman world. It focuses on the development, functions and use of coins in the Western Mediterranean in the period 500-100 BC. The adaptation and use of coinage in this period will be studied in the context of the constantly changing balance of power in the area. In the struggle over hegemony in the western Mediterranean, coinage was an important instrument to finance the various bids for power, to display developing identities and shifting loyalties and to facilitate control over subjugated areas. Central to the proposed project is an interdisciplinary approach from the perspective of the 'longue durée'. For it is thought, that a comprehensive understanding of the adaptation and use of the earliest western currencies is best achieved by a diachronic, systematic comparison of the phenomenon within a wide geographical scope. The PhD project concerns the use and functions of uncoined metal (lumps of bronze, silver or gold, often of a standardized weight) in the study area. The use of uncoined metal and the adoption of a fixed weight standard are usually thought to have been the first step towards a coinage system. The aim is to find out how the various groups of people in the Western Mediterranean used uncoined metal and to reconstruct the various trajectories towards a coinage system. The research method is expected to mainly consist of analyzing archaeological contexts containing finds of uncoined metal. The theoretical framework of economic anthropology will be used to interpret the assembled dataset. The task of the PhD-student will be: • Successfully carry through the research project on the use and functions of uncoined metal, resulting in a PhD-thesis on this topic • To present his/her research in papers in journals and at conferences • To participate in the meetings of the research team The ideal candidate is a team-player and capable of both independent and joint research. Furthermore he/she should have: • A MA or equivalent degree in Mediterranean Archaeology or Archaeology of the Roman Provinces • A keen interest in interdisciplinary work As the candidate will have to enroll as a PhD-student at the Goethe-University, the following language requirements should be met: • Latinum, English, German, French (can be substituted for another romanesque language) We offer: • A three-year contract salary group E13 TV-G-U 50% • Funding for extended research stays abroad and attendance of conferences • A stimulating work environment • Flexibility and independence Applications should include: • CV & List of publications (if applicable) • Copies of your MA or equivalent degree and your High School diploma • A copy of your MA-thesis, or of up to three papers you have published. • A letter of recommendation • A letter of motivation • A brief research proposal (max. 2 pages) on the use and functions of uncoined metal in the Western Mediterranean Applications should be sent in no later than June 28th 2010, either by post or electronically to: Prof.Dr. Fleur Kemmers Goethe Universität Frankfurt am Main Institut für Archäologische Wissenschaften, Abt.
